In short: Before joining the Los Angeles Lakers, Collin Sexton navigated a high-stakes path through college scandals and professional trades. From a standout at Alabama to an explosive rookie for the Cleveland Cavaliers, his journey reveals the intense scrutiny and rapid movement defining modern professional basketball careers.

Born in Marietta, Georgia, on January 4, 1999, Collin Sexton entered the basketball world at age three. His ascent was rapid; by 2017, he was a McDonald's All-American and a highly-rated five-star recruit. After transferring from Hillgrove High School to Pebblebrook High School, he helped lead the Falcons to a 2016 Georgia Class 6A state championship game.

Sexton's collegiate career at the University of Alabama was marked by both brilliance and controversy. In November 2017, he scored 40 points while playing shorthanded against the University of Minnesota. His tenure was briefly shadowed by an FBI investigation into college basketball corruption, during which his name was mentioned regarding potential payments or dinners, though he was ultimately cleared of any wrongdoing.

Entering the NBA in 2018 as the 8th overall pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers, Sexton displayed historic efficiency. He became the only rookie in NBA history to play at least 2,000 minutes while maintaining over 16 points per game, 40% three-point accuracy, and fewer than three turnovers. By averaging 20+ points per game before age 22, he became the sole Cavalier to do so alongside Kyrie Irving and LeBron James.

His professional trajectory has since been defined by movement. Following a stint in Cleveland, he was part of a significant sign-and-trade to the Utah Jazz in 2022. Following his time with the Chicago Bulls and Charlotte Hornets, he entered a $19-million, two-year deal with the Los Angeles Lakers in July 2026.
