A football club that survived a fan revolt to find glory
In short: When the Saigon Port Football Club rebranded in 2009, it triggered such a fierce backlash from supporters that the entire Fans Association resigned. Yet, this identity crisis paved the way for a professional era, culminating in a historic national cup victory and a return to its roots.
The club's history is a cycle of rebranding and institutional shifts. Originally established as Saigon Port Workers Football Club on November 1, 1975, it inherited the legacy of the pre-1975 Saigon Harbour team. For decades, it was a staple of Southern Vietnamese football, producing a 'Golden Generation' in the 1980s that supplied numerous players to the national team, including stars like Huỳnh Hồng Sơn.
The most contentious period occurred at the end of 2008. Facing financial constraints from the Saigon Port Corporation, leadership sought a professional model and renamed the team Ho Chi Minh City Football Club in early 2009 with a 15 billion Vietnam Dong investment. This move backfired socially; supporters were so devoted to the 'Saigon Port' heritage that they dissolved their association in protest. The club plummeted into the Second Division shortly after, spending years fighting to regain its top-flight status.
Stability returned through strategic investments and coaching changes. After winning promotion to V.League 1 in 2016, the club saw a resurgence under coach Jung Hae-seong, finishing as runners-up in 2019. A major ownership shift occurred on July 14, 2025, when the Ho Chi Minh City Public Security Department took over, rebranding the team to Cong An Ho Chi Minh City FC. This move restored a name that had been absent from the football system since 2002, and the club immediately secured its first national cup title in 26 years.
The narrative of CAHCMC is one of balancing commercial viability with cultural identity. It highlights how professionalization can alienate a core fanbase if heritage is discarded too quickly, but also shows how institutional backing can eventually stabilize a volatile sporting legacy.
