In short: From captaining the Penrith Panthers to representing Italy in rugby union, Craig Gower’s career was a whirlwind of elite achievement. Yet, his journey was marked by high-profile controversies and a reputation that tested the limits of professional sportsmanship and club loyalty.

Born in Penrith, New South Wales, in 1978, Craig Gower emerged as a premier talent in rugby league. After making his ARL debut for the Penrith Panthers in 1996, he quickly rose through the ranks. By 1997, he was representing the Australian Super League side, and by 1999, he was a New South Wales State of Origin player. His leadership peaked when he captained the Panthers to an NRL Premiership victory in 2003, a feat followed by his appointment as Australia's captain for a 2005 Test match against France.

Gower’s career was defined by its versatility and his ability to switch codes. After a successful stint in rugby league, he signed with the French Top 14 side Bayonne in 2007. His Italian heritage allowed him to represent Italy in rugby union, making his debut against Australia in 2009. This dual-code international status is a rare feat in professional rugby, highlighting his exceptional skill set across different disciplines of the sport.

However, his professional ascent was shadowed by significant off-field incidents. In 2005, a series of disruptive behaviors at a charity golf event—including an altercation with guests and a confrontation with a radio personality—resulted in a $100,000 fine from the NRL. While the Panthers controversially reappointed him as captain in 2007, the incidents sparked intense public debate regarding the responsibilities of sporting leaders and the culture of professional rugby.

Gower eventually returned to rugby league with the London Broncos and the Newcastle Knights before retiring in 2013 due to injury. His legacy remains complex: a Hall of Fame inductee for the Panthers, yet a figure whose career serves as a case study in the volatility of sporting stardom.
