In short: One woman holds the secrets of a Special Military Unit; the other is a star of the WNBA. Courtney Williams, a high-level clearance holder, now faces federal charges for allegedly leaking national defense secrets to a journalist. Her story explores the heavy price of breaking a solemn oath.

Courtney Williams, 40, of Wagram, North Carolina, was recently arrested and indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly transmitting classified national defense information to unauthorized individuals, including a journalist. During the period spanning 2010 until 2016, Williams maintained a Top Secret / Sensitive Compartmented Information security clearance while serving a Special Military Unit (SMU). In this role, she had daily access to a broad range of classified data and received formal training on the safeguarding and storage of such secrets. She also signed a Classified Nondisclosure Agreement, acknowledging that unauthorized disclosures could result in criminal prosecution.

The alleged betrayal unfolded between 2022 and 2025. The individual allegedly traded upwards of 180 texts and spent over 10 hours on phone calls with a reporter gathering material for a book and an article. While the journalist published works naming Williams as a source, the FBI alleges these disclosures included classified tradecraft, tactics, and techniques. Beyond direct communication, Williams also allegedly shared unauthorized national defense information via her social media accounts. In messages to third parties, she expressed awareness of the legal stakes, even noting she might be "probably going to jail for life."

The government emphasizes that clearance holders accept a "solemn obligation" to protect entrusted information, a trust critical to national security. FBI Counterintelligence and Espionage Division Assistant Director Roman Rozhavsky described the behaviour as self-serving and reckless, stating that such leaks endangered allies and warfighters. This case serves as a stark warning to current and former clearance holders: the federal government intends to pursue criminal charges to hold those who prioritize personal feelings over national safety accountable.
