In short: Craig James was a dual-threat star who chose the path of a pioneer over a guaranteed NFL spot. But his journey from record-breaking college yards to high-profile broadcasting reveals how quickly athletic fame can collide with polarizing political controversy.

Growing up in Texas, Craig James became a standout athlete at Stratford High School, where he set the single-season rushing record with 2,411 yards. Despite an offer from the New York Yankees to play first base in the minor leagues, James chose football. He eventually enrolled at Southern Methodist University (SMU) alongside Eric Dickerson. The duo became known as 'The Pony Express,' a tandem that alternated possessions throughout their careers. During his first season of college football, James surpassed Dickerson's yardage totals to earn the Southwest Conference Offensive Newcomer of the Year award.

James’ professional path was defined by risk-taking. In 1983, he chose to join the inaugural USFL as a 'pioneer,' signing with the Washington Federals despite already being drafted by the New England Patriots. After a knee injury in 1984 led to his release from the Federals, James joined the Patriots. He eventually became their leading rusher in 1985, earning a Pro Bowl selection and helping lead them to an AFC title game victory. However, chronic shoulder injuries ultimately cut his NFL career short after five seasons.

Following retirement, James transitioned into a prominent broadcasting career with ABC, ESPN, and CBS. His career took a sharp turn in 2011 when he announced a run for the U.S. Senate in Texas. His candidacy was marked by controversial remarks regarding same-sex marriage, which led to his abrupt firing from Fox Sports Southwest in 2013—an incident that resulted in a lawsuit alleging religious discrimination. He finished the 2012 Republican primary with just 3.6% of the vote.
