In short: D. J. Wonnum’s path to the NFL wasn't a straight line. From de-committing twice before landing at South Carolina to navigating a career-altering injury, his journey highlights the grit required to transition from a high school standout to a versatile professional playmaker.

D. J. Wonnum's collegiate trajectory was defined by significant shifts in commitment. After attending Stephenson High School in Georgia, where he earned All-Region honors, he initially committed to Iowa State. However, a coaching change led him to de-commit, followed by a second de-commitment from Indiana before he eventually signed with the South Carolina Gamecocks. This period of uncertainty preceded a highly productive collegiate career where he served as a permanent team captain during his sophomore year.

At South Carolina, Wonnum established himself as a disruptive force on the defensive line. He topped the squad's stats in his second year, tallying 6.0 sacks and 13.0 tackles for loss. His junior year was severely hampered by an ankle injury during the season opener, limiting him to just five games. Despite this, he remained a key contributor, recording 3.5 tackles for loss and two sacks during that abbreviated campaign.

Wonnum entered the professional ranks as the 117th overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft by the Minnesota Vikings. His early career was marked by high-leverage plays, including a strip sack on Aaron Rodgers that helped secure a win against the Green Bay Packers. After a season-ending torn quadriceps in late 2023, he moved to the Carolina Panthers in 2024 before signing a one-year deal with the Detroit Lions in March 2026.

His career illustrates the physical demands of the defensive end position. Moving between teams like the Vikings, Panthers, and Lions, Wonnum has consistently contributed to pass defense and tackling. In 2025, he demonstrated his reliability by starting 15 of 16 games, recording three sacks and an interception, proving his ability to adapt to new schemes and systems.
