The calculated climb of a second-round draft pick to Super Bowl champion
In short: From a military academy to the pinnacle of professional football, Jarran Reed’s career is a study in persistence. After navigating the junior college circuit and the high-stakes NFL draft, the defensive end proved his worth through massive contract extensions and championship victories.
Jarran Reed’s path to the NFL was far from linear. After graduating from Goldsboro High School in 2011, he spent a year at Hargrave Military Academy to qualify for Division 1 football. He then moved to East Mississippi Community College, where he recorded 100 career tackles and helped secure the 2013 NJCAA national championship. By 2014, he had transferred to the University of Alabama, eventually playing a key role in their College Football Playoff national championship victory.
His professional ascent began in the 2016 NFL draft, where the Seattle Seahawks used the 49th overall pick to select him. The team demonstrated their commitment by trading away their second- and fourth-round picks to the Chicago Bears to secure him. Reed signed an initial four-year deal worth approximately $4.889 million. While his early seasons showed steady development, 2018 served as his breakout year, during which he recorded a career-high 10.5 sacks.
Reed's career has been marked by both significant financial milestones and professional hurdles. He navigated a six-game suspension in 2019 following a violation of the personal conduct policy, but returned to become a cornerstone of the Seahawks' defense. His value was reflected in massive extensions, including a $23 million deal in 2020 and a $25 million extension in 2025. This journey culminated in a Super Bowl LX victory on February 8, 2026, where he contributed two assisted tackles in a 29–13 win over the New England Patriots.
