How an undersized cornerback transformed into a multi-million dollar NFL safety
In short: In high school, Camryn Bynum was considered too small for varsity football. Yet, he went from a three-star recruit to a cornerstone defender, eventually securing a massive $60 million contract through sheer defensive versatility and relentless play.
Bynum's ascent was defined by his ability to adapt. After playing as a cornerback for the California Golden Bears—where he was the only player to start all 42 games between 2017 and 2020—he transitioned to safety upon entering the NFL. This positional shift was vital for his professional longevity, allowing him to compete for starting roles in Minnesota under multiple coaching regimes.
His statistical growth reflects this evolution. In his 2021 rookie season, Bynum recorded 28 combined tackles and one interception. By 2023, he had become a dominant force, tallying a career-high 137 combined tackles and earning NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors after a standout performance against the San Francisco 49ers. His efficiency was further validated by Pro Football Focus, which gave him a 73.2 grade during that peak 2023 campaign.
The financial rewards of his consistency arrived in 2025. After proving his value in the NFC North, Bynum signed a lucrative four-year, $60 million deal with the Indianapolis Colts. The contract, which includes $30 million in total guarantees, marks the culmination of a journey that began in Corona, California, where he first had to fight for a spot on his high school varsity squad.
Beyond the field, Bynum's identity is deeply rooted in his heritage. Of Filipino and African American descent, he has actively promoted flag football in the Philippines, the country where his maternal great-grandmother's roots trace back to Leyte.
