The versatile rock journeyman who stepped into the shoes of legends
In short: From the frontman of Brother Cane to the lead guitarist for Alice Cooper and Thin Lizzy, Damon Johnson's career is a masterclass in musical adaptability. How does one musician navigate the heavy legacies of rock's most iconic bands while carving out a distinct solo identity?
Damon Johnson’s career is defined by his ability to transition between roles as a songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist. In the early 1990s, he transformed the band Chyld into Brother Cane, taking over lead vocals after securing a developmental deal with Virgin Records in November 1erb 1990. The group achieved significant success, with their self-titled debut selling 300,000 copies and producing three number one rock radio singles, including "And Fools Shine On." The band's later albums, Seeds and Wishpool, also contributed to their success on the charts. This era of the group was marked by extensive touring alongside heavyweights like Van Halen and Aerosmith.
His versatility extends to high-profile collaborations and band memberships. Johnson served as lead guitarist for Alice Cooper between 2004 and 2006, and returned to the band in 2009. In 2011, he accepted an invitation from Scott Gorham to join Thin Lizzy, a band that had influenced him since 1979. When the members of Thin Lizzy decided to put the band on hiatus to avoid recording without the late Phil Lynott, Johnson co-founded the spin-off group Black Star Riders in December 2012. The Black Star Riders achieved notable success with their second album, The Killer Instinct, which reached number 13 in the UK. He also contributed to the songwriting for Queensrÿche's tenth studio album, American Soldier.
Beyond his work in established groups, Johnson is a prolific songwriter for other legends. His compositions have been recorded by Stevie Nicks, Carlos Santana, and Sammy Hagar. Most recently, in July 2021, he stepped in to support Lynyrd Skynyrd as a temporary replacement for Gary Rossington. After Rossington passed away during 2023, Johnson stayed with the band, having received permission from Rossington to preserve the group's iconic guitar style. His songwriting credits also include work for Ted Nugent and Skid Row. Additionally, he played guitar on Faith Hill's popular single, "Cry".
