From five-star recruit to NFL veteran: the rise and retirement of Damien Harris
In short: Before he was an NFL mainstay, Damien Harris was a high school phenomenon in Kentucky. After dominating the college ranks as a two-time national champion with Alabama, he navigated the physical rigors of the professional game, facing everything from broken fingers to a frightening ambulance exit.
Damien Harris’s ascent began at Madison Southern High School in Beready, Kentucky, where he established himself as a premier talent. A five-star recruit, Harris was ranked as the eighth best overall player in his class and the top running back by the Rivals.com network, accumulating 6,748 rushing yards and 122 touchdowns during his high school career.
His transition to the University of Alabama saw him evolve from a backup to Derrick Henry in 2015 to a primary force under head coach Nick Saban. By 2017, Harris had surpassed the 1,000-yard milestone in a single season, recording 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns across 14 games. His collegiate success earned him a third-round selection by the New England Patriots in the 2019 NFL draft, where he was the 87th overall pick.
Harris's professional career was defined by both high-impact production and significant physical adversity. During the 2021 season, he emerged as a premier scoring threat, finishing second in the league with 15 rushing touchdowns. However, his tenure was often interrupted by injuries, including a broken finger in 2020, a concussion in 2021, and a hamstring injury in 2022. His time with the Buffalo Bills, which began with a $1.7 million contract in March 2023, was cut short by a severe collision with linebacker Bobby Okereke that required an ambulance transport for a neck sprain. Following his stint as a free agent, Harris announced his retirement from professional football on March 25, 2024, and transitioned into a role as an analyst for CBS Sports.
