How a defender turned a struggling club into a premiership dynasty
In short: In 2009, Richmond was languishing in second-to-last place. When Damien Hardwick took the reins, he didn't just stabilize the club; he ended a 37-year drought. From a tough-tackling defender to a three-time premiership coach, his journey is a masterclass in sustained excellence and sudden transformation.
Damien Hardwick's coaching legacy is defined by his transformative tenure at the Richmond Football Club. Appointed at the end of the 2009 season to replace caretaker Jade Rawlings, Hardwick inherited a team that had struggled significantly. His impact was felt immediately through a shift in intensity; in his first season, the Tigers set a new AFL record for most tackles in a single match, recording 142 tackles in a victory over Port Adelaide.
The breakthrough arrived in 2017 when Hardwick led Richmond to a 48-point Grand Final victory over the Adelaide Crows, securing the club's first premiership since 1980. This victory marked the beginning of a dominant era. He followed this with a resounding 89-point win over the GWS Giants in 2019 and a third premiership in four years in 2020, defeating the Geelong Cats at The Gabba.
Hardwick's success is rare; he joined a small group of individuals to win three AFL premierships as both a player and a coach. As a player, he secured flags with Essendon in 2000 and Port Adelaide in 2004. However, the pressures of elite coaching eventually took their toll. In May 2023, Hardwick unexpectedly resigned from Richmond, citing burnout and the immense stress of the role. He has since moved on to lead the Gold Coast Suns, beginning a six-year contract in 2024.
His career is a testament to resilience, moving from the disappointment of being overlooked for coaching roles at Melbourne and Essendon in 2007 to becoming the longest-tenured coach in Richmond's history.
