Born in London and raised in Spain, this Icelandic forward is a rising star.
In short: Daníel Tristan Guðjohnsen is carving his own path in professional football. From the prestigious La Masia academy to the Swedish Allsvenskan, the young forward has navigated a complex career path, overcoming significant injury setbacks to become a key contributor for Malmö FF and a representative of the Icelandic national team.
Born on 1 March 2006 in London, Daníel Guðjohnsen spent his formative years in Spain. His footballing education began at the local club CF Gavà before he joined the renowned FC Barcelona academy, La Masia, at age nine. After four years of development, a family move to Madrid saw him transition to the Real Madrid academy. By August 2022, he had signed with the Swedish club Malmö FF, initially joining their under-19 setup before earning a promotion to the senior squad in April 2023.
His professional journey has not been without hurdles. Following his Allsvenskan debut in June 2023, he faced an 18-month struggle with a back injury that kept him sidelined. He returned to the match squad in November 2024 and soon demonstrated his potential, scoring a hat-trick in the Svenska Cupen. By the 2025 season, he established himself as a regular starter, finishing the campaign as Malmö FF's top point scorer with 12 points, comprised of 5 goals and 7 assists across 23 league appearances.
Daníel comes from a prominent footballing lineage; he is the son of former professional Eiður Guðjohnsen and the grandson of former Icelandic international Arnór Guðjohnsen. His brothers, Sveinn Aron and Andri, are also professional players. In September 2025, Daníel made his senior international debut for Iceland, playing alongside his brother Andri. His international profile grew further in June 2026, when he gained attention for a viral moment involving Lionel Messi, highlighting the deep-rooted connections his family maintains within the global football community.
Recognized by The Guardian in October 2023 as one of the top talents born in 2006, Daníel continues to evolve. His increased playing time in 2025, following the departure of teammate Isaac Kiese Thelin, provided the platform he needed to prove his worth at the highest level of Swedish club football.
