From overlooked draft pick to the captaincy of the Sydney Swans
In short: Before becoming an All-Australian star, Dane Rampe faced the crushing reality of being passed over in the AFL draft. His journey from the Victorian Football League back to Sydney is a masterclass in persistence, proving that a second chance can lead to the very top of the sport.
Born in Sydney to Estonian immigrants, Dane Ramle's path to professional football was far from linear. After being overlooked in the initial AFL draft, he relocated to Melbourne to test his mettle in the Victorian Football League (VFL). During three seasons with Williamstown, he experienced both the highs of winning the inaugural Foxtel Cup and the heartbreak of a Grand Final appearance in 2011. Despite two preseason invitations to train with the Western Bulldogs, the 2010 draft once again left him without a professional contract.
The turning point came when Rampe returned to his roots in the AFL Sydney Premier Division. After winning the Phelan Medal for Best and Fairest in 2012, his talent was finally recognized by scouts, leading to his signing with the Sydney Swans Academy. He made his official AFL debut in 2013, quickly establishing himself as a defensive force. His rise was marked by significant individual honors, including an All-Australian selection in 2016 and a club Best and Fairest award in 2019.
Rampe's career has been defined by both leadership and intense passion, sometimes bordering on controversy. He served as co-captain of the Swans from 2019 through the end of the 2023 season. While his tenacity earned him the 2020 Robert Rose Award for Most Courageous Player—notably playing four games with a broken hand—his fiery temperament has occasionally drawn fines, such as a A$10,000 penalty for comments made to an umpire. Whether leading the side in the 2024 Grand Final or navigating the physical rigors of the league, Rampe remains a central figure in the Swans' history.
