Chad Warner: The Rise and Turbulent Path of a Sydney Swans Midfield Star
In short: Recruited as the 39th pick in the 2019 AFL draft, Chad Warner quickly became a standout for the Sydney Swans. Known for his explosive impact and high-level midfield play, his career trajectory has spanned All-Australian honors and grand final appearances, though recent seasons have brought significant on-field and off-field challenges.
Born on 19 May 2001, Chad Warner developed his football skills in Willetton, Western Australia, before joining the Sydney Swans. His professional journey began in the 2020 season, but it was his breakout 2022 campaign that solidified his reputation as one of the competition's premier young talents. During that year, he earned a spot in the All-Australian squad and finished as the runner-up for the Bob Skilton Medal. His influence was consistently noted by observers, including journalist Damian Barrett, who frequently highlighted his potential to secure the prestigious Brownlow Medal.
Warner's career has been marked by high-impact performances in critical matches. In 2023, he received the Goodes–O’Loughlin Medal for his display against Carlton and finished the season with 16 Brownlow votes. His 2024 season saw him earn his first official All-Australian selection, featuring standout games against the Western Bulldogs and Collingwood. However, the 2025 season proved more difficult for both Warner and the Sydney Swans. Following a coaching change to Dean Cox and the extended absence of teammate Errol Gulden, the team finished 10th and missed the finals, with Warner recording fewer high-disposal games compared to previous years.
The trajectory of his career faced a sharp interruption in 2026. On 19 August 2026, the Sydney Swans suspended Warner and four other players for the remainder of the season following an incident in a Melbourne hotel room. While a report of sexual assault was filed by a woman present in the room, media reports have not suggested that the players involved are being accused of the act itself. This event marked a sudden conclusion to his 2026 campaign, contrasting with his earlier years of consistent progression alongside his brother and teammate, Corey Warner.
