The winger who rewrote the record books for Queensland
In short: In 2017, Dane Gagai achieved something unprecedented in the State of Origin series. While most players strive for the win, this powerhouse winger became the first player in history to win the Wally Lewis Medal while playing in the wing position.
Dane Gagai’s career is defined by a rare blend of physical dominance and cultural heritage. Born in Mackay, Queensland, in 1991, Gagai carries Torres Strait Islander roots from his father’s family on Yam and Badu Islands, alongside Ngati Pikiao Maori ancestry from his mother. This dual heritage has allowed him to represent both the Indigenous All Stars and the Maori All Stars, making him a significant figure in international rugby league.
His professional journey has seen him navigate both immense triumph and intense personal hardship. In 2017, he reached the pinnacle of the sport, winning the Rugby League World Cup with Australia and earning the Wally Lewis Medal as the State of Origin Player of the Series. However, his career has also been marked by raw emotion; during his 100th NRL game, he was seen visibly distraught on camera, a moment later revealed to be caused by the death of his grandmother on that very day.
Gagai has been a mainstay for clubs like the Brisbane Broncos, South Sydney Rabbitohs, and the Newcastle Knights. His versatility has seen him transition from a fullback to a winger and centre. Despite facing disciplinary setbacks, including being banned from the Queensland Origin camp in 2018 and various sin-bin incidents, his impact remains undeniable. As of late 2024, he remains a vital component of the Newcastle Knights, having recently re-signed with the club for two more years.
