In short: At age 14, a volleyball coach asked to see a girl's hands—a strange request that would pivot her life toward a historic career. Dani Busboom Kelly went from a multi-sport high school standout to a rare champion who won NCAA titles both as a player and a head coach.

Dani Busboom Kelly's trajectory began in Cortland, Nebraska, where she was a versatile athlete, securing state titles in both volleyball and basketball. Her path to elite volleyball was sparked during a camp where head coach John Cook identified her as a potential setter. Despite not being a top prospect at the time, Cook's persistence convinced her parents to let her stay for extra training, a turning point that led her to the University of Nebraska.

As a player from 2003 to 2006, Kelly became a dual-threat force as a setter and libero. She finished her collegiate career as one of only two players in Nebraska history to rank in the top 10 for both digs (1,281) and assists (2,925). She was a key architect of the 2006 NCAA Championship team. After a brief stint in the insurance industry, she transitioned to coaching, eventually returning to Nebraska as an assistant and becoming one of the few individuals to win a Division I NCAA title in both playing and coaching capacities.

Kelly’s head coaching tenure at Louisville (2017–2024) was marked by rapid ascent. In 2021, she led the team to an undefeated regular season and its first-ever Final Four, earning her the AVCA National Coach of the Year honors. In early 2025, following the retirement of John Cook, she was named the head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers, a move orchestrated by Cook, who viewed her as his sole successor for the program.
