The high-stakes journey of a footballing nomad across five continents
In short: From a €6 million move to Ukraine to a €30 million transfer to Bayern Munich, Douglas Costa’s career has been defined by massive fees, elite trophies, and intense controversy. His path through Europe and beyond reveals the volatile nature of life at the very top of professional football.
Douglas Costa’s ascent began in Brazil with Grêmio, where he joined at age 11 and debuted at 18 in 2008. His talent quickly attracted international interest, leading to a January 2010 move to Shakhtar Donetsk for €6 million. In Ukraine, he became a decorated winner, securing a domestic treble in the 2010–11 season and multiple league titles.
His success in Eastern Europe paved the way for a high-profile move to Bayern Munich in 2015. The €30 million transfer was the fourth-highest in the German club's history. While he secured consecutive league titles and a DFB-Pokal trophy, his time in Bavaria was marked by friction, including a public dispute with the club board regarding playing time under manager Carlo Ancelotti.
Costa’s career also features moments of significant disciplinary controversy. During a 2018 match for Juventus, he was sent off after an altercation involving an elbow, an attempted headbutt, and spitting at opponent Federico Di Francesco. The incident resulted in a four-match ban in Serie A.
In recent years, Costa has transitioned into a global journeyman. His recent clubs include a loan to LA Galaxy in Major League Soccer, a stint with Sydney FC in the A-League, and a return to Brazil with Fluminense. His career continues to span the globe, from the heights of the FIFA World Cup to the lower tiers of Italian football.
