From world record thrower to the architect of footballing promotions
In short: Before he was a decorated manager, Dave Challinor was a centre-back with a superhuman physical feat. He once held the world record for the longest football throw, but his true legacy lies in his remarkable ability to lead clubs back to the Football League.
Dave Challinor’s playing career was marked by both physical prowess and sudden hardship. In 1998, while playing for Tranmere Rovers, he set a world record at Prenton Park with a throw of 152 feet (46.34 metres), surpassing the previous mark held by Cardiff City's Andy Legg. However, his time at Stockport County was marred by a 2002 incident where a tackle on Martin Pringle resulted in a broken leg for the striker. The tackle was described as "horrendous" by then-manager Carlton Palmer, who fined Challinor two weeks' wages. A knee injury eventually forced his retirement in May 2008.
Transitioning to management, Challinor proved to be a specialist in upward mobility. At Colwyn Bay, he served as player-manager, leading the side to promotion in 2011. His tenure at AFC Fylde was even more prolific; over nearly eight years, he secured three promotions and won the FA Trophy in 2019. He continued this trend at Hartlepool United, guiding them to a National League play-off victory in June 2021, which returned the club to the Football League for the first time since 2017.
His most recent period of dominance occurred at Stockport County. After arriving in November 2021, he led the club to the National League title in May 2022 and subsequently the League Two title. His managerial prowess earned him numerous accolades, including National League Manager of the Season and the 2023–24 LMA League Two Manager of the Year. Despite the high-pressure nature of the job, including a controversial departure from Hartlepool, Challinor has established himself as a premier figure in the English football pyramid.
