In short: Andrew Woodman spent years as a journeyman goalkeeper, marked by early disciplinary struggles and a revolving door of clubs. Yet, his transition into management has been defined by stability and record-breaking achievements, culminating in guiding Bromley to the Football League for the first time in their long history.

Born in 1971, Andrew Woodman began his professional journey at Crystal Palace, where he spent five years without a single first-team appearance. His early career was punctuated by volatility; during a 1994 stint at Exeter City, he was sent off in consecutive matches. These dismissals forced the introduction of 15-year-old Ross Bellotti, who remains the youngest goalkeeper to ever feature in the Football League or FA Cup proper. Woodman eventually played for ten different English clubs, including Northampton Town, Brentford, and Colchester United, before retiring in 2005 after a final appearance for Rushden & Diamonds.

Following his playing days, Woodman pivoted to coaching, frequently working alongside Alan Pardew at clubs such as West Ham United, Charlton Athletic, Newcastle United, and Crystal Palace. This period provided a foundation for his eventual managerial career. In 2021, he took charge of Bromley, where he quickly made an impact. By May 2022, he secured his first major trophy as a manager by winning the FA Trophy against Wrexham. His tenure at Bromley has been marked by consistent growth, including securing promotion to the EFL in 2024 and reaching League One by 2026.

Woodman’s personal life is as intertwined with football as his professional one. He shares a deep, decades-long friendship with Gareth Southgate, dating back to their youth days at Crystal Palace. The pair co-authored the 2004 award-winning book, Woody & Nord: A Football Friendship, which chronicles their divergent paths in the sport. Today, Woodman continues to shape the future of Bromley, having signed a contract extension in August 2025 that keeps him at the club until 2028. His recognition as the 2026 EFL League Two Manager of the Season underscores his evolution from a journeyman player into a highly regarded tactician.
