In short: In 1937, a bold architectural experiment in Rotterdam redefined the stadium experience. Designed with free-hanging tiers to eliminate sightline obstacles, De Kuip became a legendary arena for football and rock legends alike. Discover the story of the steel, glass, and coal-funded masterpiece.

The origins of De Kuip, or Stadion Feijenoord, lie in a radical departure from contemporary stadium design. In the 1930s, Feyenoord president Leen van Zandvliet envisioned a venue unlike anything else on the continent. While landmarks like New York's Yankee Stadium and London's Highbury utilized double-deck stands, van Zandvliet sought a structure with two free-hanging tiers that ensured no obstacles would block a spectator's view. To achieve this, the club commissioned Johannes Brinkman and Leendert van der Vlugt—the renowned designers of Rotterdam's Van Nelle factory—to construct the arena using then-affordable materials: glass, concrete, and steel.

The project's ambitious scale was made possible by the wealth of Daniël George van Beuningen, a billionaire who amassed a fortune during World War I by exporting German coal to Britain through the neutral Netherlands. Since its completion in 1937, the stadium has survived significant upheaval, including a near-demolition attempt for scrap by German occupiers during World War II. Its capacity has fluctuated through decades of evolution, expanding from an original 64,000 to 69,000 in 1949, before a 1994 renovation converted it into a 51,117-seat all-seater venue.

Beyond football, De Kuip became a premier concert venue starting in 1978 with Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton. It has hosted icons such as Pink Floyd, Madonna, and Bruce Springsteen. However, a new chapter is closing; due to nearby residential construction and noise concerns, the Rotterdam municipality has announced that concerts will cease after mid-2025. While the stadium remains a monument of Rotterdam, its era as a musical landmark will conclude following a final series of shows by the band Di-rect in June 2025.
