The explosive speed that redefined the modern running back
In short: He possessed the fastest 40-yard dash of his entire draft class, yet his size raised questions about his professional longevity. From a decorated Texas high school star to an NFL standout, De'Von Achane’s career is a study in elite, high-velocity impact.
Before entering the NFL, De'Von Achane established himself as a dual-threat powerhouse in Texas. At Thurgood Marshall High School, he amassed nearly 4,800 rushing yards and 87 touchdowns, earning a 4-star recruit ranking. His athleticism extended beyond the gridiron; he was a standout sprinter, notably recognized as the top high school track athlete in Texas for 2020.
During his tenure with the Texas A&M Aggies, Achane transitioned from a backup role in 2020 to a dominant force. His 2021 season was particularly remarkable, as he led the SEC in rushing yards per attempt at 7.0. He proved his big-play capability with a 96-yard kickoff return against Alabama and earned Orange Bowl MVP honors after a 140-yard performance against North Carolina.
The Miami Dolphins selected him in the third round of the 2023 NFL draft, 84th overall. While his physical stature initially caused scouts to hesitate, his efficiency quickly silenced critics. His rookie campaign featured an explosive 203-yard performance against the Denver Broncos, earning him AFC Offensive Player of the Week honors. By the 2025 season, he had evolved into a premier offensive weapon, recording 1,350 rushing yards and earning a Pro Bowl selection.
However, his high-intensity style has faced significant physical tolls. After navigating a knee injury in late 2023, his 2026 season was cut short by a torn ACL sustained during a game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Despite these setbacks, his value to the Dolphins was cemented on May 13, 2026, when he signed a massive four-year, $64 million contract extension.
