How a failed 1894 experiment birthed the Dutch Cup
In short: The KNVB Cup didn't start with a bang, but with a series of cancellations. After an initial attempt in 1894 collapsed due to lack of interest and withdrawn trophies, a second attempt was thwarted by terrible weather, leaving the Netherlands waiting until 1898 for a true knockout competition.
The origins of the KNVB Cup are rooted in the English FA Cup format. The first serious attempt at a national knockout competition occurred in 1894, but it was short-lived. While Haarlem defeated HFC 3–1 in the first match on 11 February, several teams withdrew, leading the trophy provider, H.M.C. Holdert, to pull his offer. A second attempt in early 1898 was also derailed when heavy rain caused widespread match postponements across the western leagues.
The tournament finally launched during the 1898–99 season. The inaugural final took place on 9 May 1899, where RAP Amsterdam secured a 1–0 victory over HVV Den Haag, thanks to an extra-time goal from Jan Hisgen. Since 1989, the final has been held annually at De Kuip, a tradition that has endured for decades.
The competition's identity has shifted through various sponsorships, including the Amstel Cup and the Gatorade Cup. Today, it is known as the Eurojackpot KNVB Beker under a five-year agreement announced on 10 June 2025 that lasts until the 2029–30 season. While the trophy itself was updated to silver in 1946—a rarity in the post-war era—a special gold version was commissioned in 2018 to celebrate the tournament's 100th edition.
Success in the cup offers more than just local prestige. While winners once qualified for the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, they now enter the UEFA Europa League. This creates unique scenarios, such as in 1998, when both finalists, Ajax and PSV, had already qualified for the Champions League, necessitating a third-place play-off between SC Heerenveen and FC Twente to decide the European berth.
