From high school phenom to NBA Finals heartbreak
In short: De'Aaron Fox has experienced the highest highs and lowest lows of professional basketball. After a historic scoring burst and a massive contract extension, the star guard faced a devastating Finals blunder that left fans and critics questioning his composure under pressure.
De'Aaron Fox's ascent began in Texas, where he was a standout at Cypress Lakes High School. By his senior year, he was averaging over 32 points per game and was recognized as a McDonald's All-American. His talent led him to the Kentucky Wildcats, where he quickly made his mark, recording a rare triple-double in 2017 and earning SEC Tournament MVP honors.
Entering the NBA via the 2017 draft, Fox's career with the Sacramento Kings was defined by explosive scoring and defensive tenacity. In late 2024, he achieved a feat of historic proportions, scoring 60 points in a single game and following it with 49 points the next day. This 109-point two-day stretch placed him in an elite group alongside legends like Kobe Bryant and Wilt Chamberlain.
However, his journey has not been without controversy or error. Beyond the collapse of his 'SwipaTheFox' NFT project, which left significant unpaid investments, Fox faced intense scrutiny during the 2026 NBA Finals. While playing for the San Antonio Spurs, a critical decision to attempt a layup instead of running out the clock allowed the New York Knicks to complete a 29-point comeback, costing the Spurs the championship.
Despite these setbacks, Fox remains a premier talent. Known for his elite speed and ability to lead the league in steals, he has secured massive contract extensions, including a $229 million maximum deal with the Spurs intended to keep him with the franchise through the 2029–30 season.
