From the sidelines of the SEC to the race for the U.S. Senate
In short: Derek Dooley’s life has been defined by high-stakes transitions. An attorney turned elite football coach and assistant, he navigated the intense pressure of the SEC and the NFL before pivoting to the political arena in a bid for Georgia's Senate seat.
Born in Athens, Georgia, in 1968, Derek Dooley was raised in the shadow of football royalty as the son of University of Georgia legend Vince Dooley. Demonstrating prowess in both sports and academics, he transitioned from a standout tight end at Clarke Central High School to a University of Virginia wide receiver walk-on, eventually obtaining a 1994 Juris Doctor from the University of Georgia School of Law. Before focusing on coaching, he even practiced law in Atlanta.
Dooley’s coaching career saw him climb the ranks of the most prestigious programs in the country. He served as an assistant under Nick Saban at both LSU and the Miami Dolphins, contributing to a BCS National Championship at LSU in 2003. His tenure as a head coach included stints at Louisiana Tech, where he uniquely served as both head coach and Athletics Director, and the University of Tennessee. His time at Tennessee (2010–2012) was famously difficult, marked by losing seasons and a controversial 4 OT loss to Missouri that ultimately led to his dismissal.
Beyond the college game, Dooley found success in the NFL, coaching wide receivers for the Dallas Cowboys from 2013 to 2017, where he worked with Pro Bowlers like Dez Bryant. He also held roles with the New York Giants and the Alabama Crimson Tide. In 2025, Dooley transitioned from the gridiron to the political stage, announcing a Republican run for the U.S. Senate in Georgia for the 2026 election. Though endorsed by Governor Brian Kemp, his bid ended in a primary runoff loss to U.S. Representative Mike Collins in June 2026.
