In short: In a season defined by struggle, Derek Mason orchestrated a moment of profound cultural significance. While his win-loss record faced intense scrutiny, his decision to introduce a female athlete to the gridiron changed the landscape of collegiate athletics forever.

Derek Mason’s tenure as head coach at Vanderbilt University (2014–2020) was marked by extreme fluctuations in performance. After a difficult 3–9 debut season, Mason led the Commodores to a 6–6 record in 2016, achieving bowl eligibility for the first time under his leadership. His defensive schemes earned national respect, and he achieved the rare feat of defeating Tennessee three consecutive years, a feat not seen at the school since the 1924–1926 era under Dan McGugin.

However, the latter years of his Vanderbilt tenure were characterized by regression. The 2017 season saw a 5–7 finish, and the 2019 campaign was particularly difficult, with the team scoring ten points or fewer in six of its twelve games. The 2020 season, shortened by COVID-19, proved to be the most challenging; Mason became the first coach in Vanderbilt history to oversee a winless season, as the team went 0–8.

Amidst this period of athletic hardship, Mason facilitated a landmark moment for women in sports. On November 28, 2020, during a game against Missouri, Mason introduced Sarah Fuller, a goalkeeper from the women's soccer team, to the football field. As the first woman to play for a Power Five conference team, Fuller’s appearance was a historic milestone, even as the team fell 41–0. Mason was dismissed from Vanderbilt the following day, but his role in this breakthrough remains a significant chapter in the program's history.
