From fifth-round draft pick to cornerstone cornerback, the evolution of Deommodore Lenoir
In short: Selected in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL draft, Deommodore Lenoir transformed from a backup into a defensive anchor for the San Francisco 49ers. His journey includes a massive $88.88 million contract extension and a career defined by high-stakes coverage, viral rivalries, and a persistent rise through the league ranks.
Deommodore Lenoir entered the NFL in 2021 after playing college football for the Oregon Ducks. Despite being projected by some analysts as a late-round pick, the San Francisco 49ers selected him 172nd overall. His rookie season was marked by a steep learning curve, as he served primarily as a backup and received a 52.1 grade from Pro Football Focus. However, his role expanded significantly in 2022 following an injury to teammate Emmanuel Moseley, leading to 13 starts and his first career interception against the Miami Dolphins.
The 2023 season proved to be a breakout year for Lenoir. He started all 17 games, recording career highs in passes defended and interceptions, and earned a 75.8 grade from Pro Football Focus. This performance helped propel the 49ers to Super Bowl LVIII, where Lenoir started and forced a fumble. His reliability and growth led to a significant financial milestone in November 2024, when he signed a five-year contract extension valued at up to $92 million, including $38.35 million in guaranteed money.
Beyond his statistical output, Lenoir has become known for his durability and high-intensity play. In 2025, he played 1,065 snaps—the third-highest total among all NFL cornerbacks—and maintained a coverage grade of 66.6. His season was also characterized by a notable rivalry with Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, which culminated in a viral confrontation during the playoffs. While his professional trajectory remains upward, his off-field life faced scrutiny in June 2025 following an arrest for obstruction of justice in Los Angeles, an incident that remains subject to ongoing legal proceedings.
