How a versatile defender rose from Serie A to the Premier League
In short: Destiny Udogie's rapid ascent in professional football is a testament to tactical versatility. From his Serie A debut with Hellas Verona to becoming a key figure for Tottenham Hotspur, the Italian international has transitioned from a promising youth talent into a high-value Premier League asset in just a few seasons.
Born on 28 November 2002, Iyenoma Destiny Udogie began his professional journey within the Hellas Verona youth system. He made his Serie A debut on 8 November 2020 during a 2–2 draw against Milan. His potential was quickly recognized, leading to a season-long loan at Udinese on 15 July 2021. During that initial loan spell, he appeared 37 times and scored five goals, prompting Udinese to exercise a €4 million purchase clause.
The defender's trajectory accelerated significantly when Tottenham Hotspur secured his permanent transfer on 16 August 2022 for a fee of €20 million, a deal lasting until 2027. After a loan back to Udinese for the 2022–23 season, he made his Tottenham debut on 13 August 2023 against Brentford. His impact was immediate; by 10 December 2023, he netted his first Premier League goal in a 4–1 win over Newcastle United. This performance led to a contract extension through 2030.
Udogie's physical profile—noted for being tall, quick, and powerful—allows him to operate across multiple roles, including left-back, wing-back, and even midfield positions. Despite a quadriceps injury in April 2024 that prevented his participation in UEFA Euro 2024, his talent earned him a nomination for the Premier League's Young Player of the Season Award on 9 May 2024. His international rise was equally swift, earning an official senior call-up from Luciano Spalletti in October 2023.
