How a college student became a cornerstone of Tamil cinema
In short: From anchoring television shows during her college years to winning multiple state awards, Devadarshini Sukumaran has navigated the distinct demands of both film and serials. Her career highlights a masterclass in comedic timing and the ability to pivot between supporting roles and lead characters.
Devadarshini Sukumaran's ascent in the Indian entertainment industry began in television. While still studying commerce in college, she started her career as a television anchor. This foundation led to her first acting role in the Doordarshan serial Kanavugal Ilavasam, eventually paving the way for her breakthrough in the mystery series Marmadesam. She specifically cites the second installment, Vidathu Karuppu, as a massive turning point that established her professional presence.
Her versatility is evidenced by her ability to transition between the medium of film and television serials. Devadarshini has noted a fundamental difference in performance requirements: while film allows for individual praise even if a co-star falters, television serials demand perfect scene timing, where a single mistake can lead to the entire sequence being criticized. This precision has helped her secure three Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, including wins for Best Comedian in 2003 for Parthiban Kanavu and again in 2015 for both 36 Vayadhinile and Thiruttu Kalyanam.
Beyond comedy, she has demonstrated dramatic range, such as in the 2018 film '96, which earned significant critical acclaim. Her career also includes a role as a Chennai-based Tamil-speaking police officer in the second season of The Family Man. Interestingly, her personal and professional lives have frequently intersected; she married television actor Chetan in 2002, and they have collaborated on various projects including Marmadesam - Vidathu Karuppu and Athipookal. Her daughter, Niyati Kadambi, has also entered the industry, appearing in '96 as the younger version of her mother's character.
