How an expansion underdog rose from the bottom to championship glory
In short: In 2002, the Detroit Shock held one of the worst records in the league. Yet, just one year later, they would transform into a powerhouse, becoming the first American professional sports team to jump from the bottom of the standings to a championship title.
The Detroit Shock's journey began in 1998 as one of the WNBA's inaugural expansion franchises. After a difficult start under first head coach Nancy Lieberman, the team struggled through several seasons of mediocre records and playoff misses. However, the arrival of Detroit Pistons legend Bill Laimbeer as head coach in 2002 marked a turning point for the franchise.
Laimbeer's influence on the roster and front office helped catalyze a historic turnaround. In 2003, the Shock achieved what no other expansion team had done: winning a WNBA championship. They entered that season as underdogs against the two-time defending Los Angeles Sparks, but secured the title in a thrilling Game 3 victory with an 83–78 win, a game that drew the largest crowd in WNBA history.
The Shock maintained their dominance throughout the mid-2000s, securing additional championships in 2006 and 2008. Their success was built on key talent, including stars like Deanna Nolan and Cheryl Ford. Despite their on-court achievements, the franchise faced relocation due to economic factors, moving to Tulsa, Oklahoma, in October 2009, and later to Dallas in 2015.
The legacy of the Detroit Shock is poised for a revival. Detroit has been selected as a host city for a new WNBA team, with play expected to commence at Little Caesars Arena in 2029. This new franchise reportedly intends to reclaim the historical identity and legacy of the original Shock.
