How a childhood gift fueled a journey to the NFL
In short: For Devonta Freeman, a football gifted by his mother at age three sparked a relentless pursuit of excellence. From the youth fields of Miami to a national championship at Florida State, his path was defined by a singular, driving passion for the game and a commitment to academic success.
Starting in fifth grade, Devonta Freeman began his football journey in Miami, Florida, playing for the Moore Park Generals. His talent was evident early; during his time at Miami Central High School, he helped lead the Rockets to the 2010 Class 6A state championship. That performance earned him MVP honors after he amassed 308 yards on 38 carries, narrowly missing a state championship game record by just 20 yards. By his senior year, he was a dominant force, recording 2,208 yards and 26 touchdowns, a figure that led Miami-Dade County.
His collegiate career at Florida State University was marked by immediate impact and high-level accolades. Rated as a four-star recruit and the top running back in the nation by Rivals.com, Freeman committed to the Seminoles on June 24, 2010. During his freshman season from 2011 to 2013, he became a vital component of the running game, finishing the year as the team's leading rusher in major categories with 579 yards and eight touchdowns on 120 carries. During his junior year, he assisted the Seminoles in securing a national title.
The Atlanta Falcons chose Freeman during the 2014 NFL draft's fourth round. His career in the league included stints with several prominent teams, including the New York Giants and the Baltimore Ravens. Beyond the field, Freeman has remained dedicated to his community and his education, eventually earning a B.S. in 2022. His journey from a young boy in Florida to a professional athlete serves as a testament to the power of determination and resilience against the odds.
