The first African American and Asian American head coach to win a Division I title
In short: Marcus Freeman's journey from a heart condition that ended his playing career to the pinnacle of college football is a masterclass in resilience. He navigated the ranks of coaching at Ohio State, Purdue, and Cincinnati before leading Notre Dame to a historic 13-win season and a national championship.
Born in 1986 at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Freeman’s path was shaped by a diverse heritage—his mother is from South Korea and his father is African American. A standout athlete at Ohio State, Freeman was a two-time All-Big Ten selection, finishing his career as the 19th highest tackler in school history. However, his professional aspirations were cut short in 2010 when a physician diagnosed him with an enlarged heart condition, forcing his retirement from football just months after being drafted by the Chicago Bears.
Freeman pivoted to coaching, building a reputation as a defensive tactician. At Purdue, he transformed the linebackers into a core strength, and at the University of Cincinnati, his defense led the American Athletic Conference in rushing, scoring, and total defense in 2018. His success caught the attention of the nation, leading to his hiring at Notre Dame in 2021. He took the reins as head coach in late 2021, immediately facing the challenge of leading one of the most storied programs in American sports.
His tenure at Notre Dame was marked by high-stakes drama. In 2023, his team suffered a heartbreaking loss to Ohio State while playing with only 10 men on the field twice during the winning drive. Yet, he led them to a 10-3 finish and a historic 13-win season in 2025. After defeating Georgia in the Sugar Bowl and Penn State in the Orange Bowl, Freeman became the first coach of his background to reach a Division I national championship, eventually falling to his alma mater, Ohio State, in the title game.
