The homecoming of a five-star prodigy: DJ Lagway’s return to Baylor
In short: After a high-profile stint in the SEC, one of college football's most decorated recruits is returning to his roots. DJ Lagway, a player whose talent and lineage are deeply intertwined with Baylor football, has traded the bright lights of Florida for a chance to lead the Bears.
The connection between DJ Lagway and Baylor University is a generational story. His father, Derek Lagway (BSED ’01), was a prominent running back for the Bears from 1997 to 2001. Growing up in Willis, Texas, DJ spent his childhood touring Baylor's facilities and attending practices, a childhood shaped by his father's legacy in the green and gold.
Lagway's ascent to elite status was meteoric. During his senior year at Willis High School, he set a Texas Class 6A record with 58 touchdown passes. His accolades included being named the 2023 Gatorade National Player of the Year, Mr. Texas Football, and a consensus top-tier quarterback. His career statistics at Willis were staggering, totaling over 8,000 passing yards and 100 touchdowns, alongside nearly 2,200 rushing yards and 29 scores.
Despite his deep Baylor roots, the allure of the SEC initially led Lagway to the University of Florida. As a starter for the Gators, he recorded 4,179 passing yards and 23 touchdowns over two seasons. His time in Florida was marked by both triumph and turbulence, including a 6–1 record in his seven starts and a victory in the 2024 Gasparilla Bowl, but also significant challenges, such as a hamstring injury against Georgia and the firing of coach Billy Napier.
On December 15, 2025, Lagway announced his entry into the transfer portal. On January 8, 2026, he officially committed to Baylor, becoming the highest-rated recruit to ever play for the program. Now, as a junior, he prepares to lead the Bears' offense this fall, completing a professional and personal circle that began decades ago with his father's career in Waco.
