From backup quarterback to Super Bowl champion coach, the resilient career of Doug Pederson
In short: Born in 1968, Doug Pederson spent over a decade as an NFL backup quarterback before reinventing himself as a head coach. His journey includes winning Super Bowl XXXI as a player and leading the Philadelphia Eagles to their first-ever Super Bowl title in 2017, cementing his place in football history.
Doug Pederson’s path to coaching was defined by his long tenure as a backup quarterback. After playing for Northeast Louisiana University, he entered the NFL in 1991. He spent years in various roles, including serving as a backup to legends like Dan Marino and Brett Favre. His playing career concluded in 2004, having earned a Super Bowl ring as a member of the 1996 Green Bay Packers.
Transitioning to the sidelines, Pederson began his coaching career at Calvary Baptist Academy in Louisiana before joining Andy Reid’s staff with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2009. He followed Reid to the Kansas City Chiefs, where his success as an offensive coordinator propelled him to the Eagles' head coaching position in 2016. His tenure in Philadelphia peaked in 2017 when he guided a team led by backup quarterback Nick Foles to a victory in Super Bowl LII, the franchise's first championship since 1960.
Pederson's coaching style often involved navigating adversity, from managing injury-plagued rosters to orchestrating dramatic playoff comebacks. In 2022, he took over the Jacksonville Jaguars, leading them to a division title and a historic 27-point comeback victory in the playoffs. Despite his successes, his career saw fluctuations, including a controversial 2020 season in Philadelphia and a difficult 2024 campaign in Jacksonville. Following his departure from the Jaguars, Pederson transitioned into broadcasting, joining CBS Sports Network as a college football color commentator in 2026.
