The Brazilian footballer who switched his national allegiance to Russia
In short: Douglas Santos has navigated a complex career path across Europe and South America. From winning Olympic gold to captaining Zenit Saint Petersburg, his journey includes a rare and controversial reversal of national loyalty, moving from the Brazilian national squad to representing Russia, and then back again.
Born on 22 March 1994, Douglas Santos has established himself as a prominent left-back. His professional journey began in Brazil, making his first-team debut on 15 February 2012. After stints in Spain with Granada CF and Italy with Udinese Calcio, he found significant success in Brazil with Atlético Mineiro, where he was part of the 2015 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A Team of the Year.
His career took a significant turn when he joined Zenit Saint Petersburg in July 2019. During his tenure in the Russian Premier League, he became a decorated player, earning titles such as the Russian Premier League Left-back of the Season in 2020–21 and 2021–22, and Defender of the Season in 2022–23 and 2023–24. He also achieved the distinction of being the league's top assist provider during the 2020–21 season.
Perhaps most striking is his recent international trajectory. In March 2025, Santos made the decision to switch his allegiance to Russia, receiving a call-up for a friendly against Zambia. This occurred just three days after being on the prelist for Brazil for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification matches. However, the switch was short-lived; by 31 August 2025, FIFA approved his request to change his sports citizenship from Russian back to Brazilian, following his inclusion in Brazil's squad for qualification matches against Chile and Bolivia.
