In short: Owned by Brunei's Crown Prince, DPMM FC is a nomadic powerhouse. From domestic dominance to competing in Malaysia and Singapore, their history is a saga of championship trophies, sudden FIFA suspensions, and the logistical challenges of playing across borders.

Originally founded as a college team in 1994, DPMM FC was professionally established in 2000. The club, owned by Prince Al-Muhtadee Billah, quickly rose from the Brunei Premier League, securing titles in 2002 and 2004. However, the club's ambitions have always extended beyond Brunei's borders, leading to a complex history of participation in the Malaysian and Singaporean football systems. The squad's foundation was built upon the most talented players from Brunei's college-level football scene. In the early 2000s, the club's trophy cabinet grew with victories in the Brunei FA Cup and the Brunei Super Cup.

Their journey through Malaysia began in the 2005–06 season in the second-tier Premier League, where they earned immediate promotion to the Super League. After a period in Singapore's S.League, the club faced a major crisis in 2009. Following government interference in the Brunei Football Association, FIFA suspended the nation, forcing DPMM to withdraw from the Singaporean league five games before the season ended. This resulted in all their 2009 league results being expunged. The club's 2009 campaign was marked by a significant trophy, specifically the Singapore League Cup. This period of success was interrupted by a 20-month FIFA suspension of the national association.

The club's nomadic path continued through various iterations of the Singapore Premier League, facing challenges ranging from pandemic-related travel restrictions to changing import regulations. After a period of playing in Brunei's domestic leagues, the club officially returned to the Malaysia Super League for the 2025–26 season as a guest team. While their return included notable signings like Indonesian international Ramadhan Sananta, it also saw their heaviest defeat, a 10–0 loss to Johor Darul Ta'zim in October 2025. The club's recent history includes a 2022 Brunei FA Cup victory against Kasuka. Their home matches are hosted at the 28,000-capacity Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium.
