How a 1994 dispute birthed Singapore's professional football league
In short: Singapore's Lions were dominant in the Malaysia Cup, securing 24 titles. However, a 1994 disagreement between the FAS and FAM over gate receipts caused the team to withdraw. This dispute prompted the Football Association of Singapore to establish a professional domestic league system, leading to the S.League's 1996 launch.
The transition from amateur to professional football in Singapore was a direct response to the withdrawal of the Singapore Lions from Malaysian competitions in 1994. Following a disagreement between the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) and the Malaysia Football Association (FAM) regarding gate receipts, the Lions ceased competing in Malaysia. This left a void in the domestic football scene, prompting the FAS to establish a professional league system.
The S.League was officially founded on 14 April 1996 to expand the local football community. Its inaugural season saw eight clubs compete, including powerhouses like Geylang United and Balestier United. The first championship was decided in a playoff where Geylang United defeated SAFFC 2–1 before a record crowd of 30,000 spectators.
Over the decades, the league has undergone significant evolution. It has experimented with foreign clubs—such as China's Sinchi in 2003 and the French side Étoile, which became the first foreign club to win the league in 2010—as well as various rebranding efforts. In 2018, the competition was rebranded as the Singapore Premier League (SPL).
Today, the SPL operates without a promotion or relegation system; clubs join by invitation from the FAS. The league currently features eight clubs, with the Lion City Sailors emerging as the champions of the 2025–26 season. The league's structure continues to adapt, with recent shifts toward two-year seasons to align with the AFC continental calendar.
