How a small nation's football team became a regional powerhouse
In short: Despite a limited population pool, Singapore's national football team has historically punched above its weight. Known as The Lions, the squad has achieved significant success in regional competitions, becoming the first team to win the AFF Championship four times and maintaining a legacy that spans over a century of football history.
The Singapore national football team, nicknamed The Lions, is managed by the Football Association of Singapore (FAS), which is the oldest football association on the Asian continent. The team's history is deeply rooted in the region, having been one of the six inaugural teams to compete in the HMS Malaya Cup in 1921. Although the Singapore Lions club side was frequently equated with the national team, the professional scene changed drastically in 1996 when the S.League was established by Singapore after a disagreement with the Football Association of Malaysia regarding gate receipts.
Singapore's most notable successes have occurred within the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Championship. The Lions were the first team to win the trophy four times, securing titles in 1998, 2004, 2007, and 2012. In their 1998 victory, they defeated Vietnam in the final to claim their first major international title. During the 2004–05 tournament, they defeated Indonesia with a 5–2 aggregate score, and they successfully retained the trophy in 2007 after beating Thailand 3–2 on aggregate.
Beyond regional dominance, the team has achieved notable results against major international sides. In the 2007 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers, Singapore became the only team to defeat Iraq, who were on their way to winning the AFC Asian Cup. They have also held significant teams to draws, including a 0–0 result against Australia in March 2008 and holding Japan to a draw at Saitama Stadium during the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Most recently, in 2025, Singapore earned a spot in the 2027 AFC Asian Cup by topping their third-round group without suffering any defeats during that phase.
