In short: From the halls of the Fitzwilliam Museum to the leadership of the Yale Center for British Art, Duncan Robinson’s career was defined by a rare, collaborative spirit that connected two continents through the study of art and literature.

Duncan Robinson (1943–2022) was a distinguished scholar and curator whose influence spanned both the United Kingdom and the United States. His career was marked by significant leadership roles in some of the world's most prestigious institutions. His time as Cambridge's Fitzwilliam Museum Keeper of Paintings and Drawings commenced in 1976. A significant global post followed in 1981, when Yale Center for British Art in New Haven appointed him Director.

While leading Yale for fifteen years, Robinson also held ex-officio chief executive duties for London's Paul Mellon Centre. This position allowed him to foster deep institutional ties and launch diverse academic and curatorial initiatives focused on British art studies. His expertise was not limited to modern works; he was a specialist in twentieth-century British art but also possessed deep knowledge of the Georgian period, specifically the intersection of writing and painting in England between 1750 and 1850.

Robinson’s return to England saw him continue this pattern of high-level service. He served as the Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum from 1995 to 2007 and held the position of Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge, from 2002 to 2012. Beyond his administrative and scholarly achievements, he was recognized for his mentorship and his 'lightly worn learning.' In 2008, his contributions to the arts were formally recognized when he was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).
