From the bench to the helm: the rise of Mitch Johnson
In short: He was once a bench player at Stanford, but now he leads the San Antonio Spurs. After decades of stability under Gregg Popovich, Mitch Johnson has transitioned from an assistant coach to the man in charge of an NBA dynasty.
The path to the head coaching position was anything but linear. Born in Seattle in 1986 to former NBA player John Johnson, Mitch Johnson’s basketball journey began with standout years at O'Dea High School, where he led his team to two state championships. He later moved to the collegiate level, playing for the Stanford Cardinal from 2005 to 2009. During his time at Stanford, Johnson was a prolific playmaker, notably breaking the school record for assists in a single game with 16 against Marquette in the NCAA tournament.
After a professional playing career that included stints with the Tulsa 66ers and the Latvian club VEF Rīga, Johnson pivoted to coaching. He climbed the ranks through the Austin Spurs and the University of Portland before joining Gregg Popovich’s staff in San Antonio as an assistant in 2019. He even stepped into the spotlight during the arrival of star center Victor Wembanyayama, taking on the responsibility of warming up the young talent before games.
Johnson's ascent to head coach was precipitated by sudden changes. Following Popovich's health-related departure in November 2024, Johnson took over as interim head coach. His leadership was tested during a grueling 2024–25 season where he guided the team through a 32–45 stretch. By May 2025, he was officially promoted to head coach, succeeding Popovich after the legendary coach's 29-season tenure. His first full season saw remarkable success, leading the Spurs to a 62–20 record and an NBA Finals appearance, despite a heartbreaking loss to the New York Knicks.
