From a 45th overall pick to an NBA Finals mainstay
In short: Dwight Powell’s journey through the NBA was anything but linear. After being drafted late in 2014, he navigated a whirlwind of trades between Charlotte, Cleveland, and Boston before finding stability in Dallas. His story is a masterclass in persistence, resilience, and the grit required to reach the game's highest stage.
Born in Toronto in 1991, Dwight Powell arrived in the NBA as a highly-regarded prospect. Before his professional career, he was a five-star recruit at IMG Academy in Florida, where he averaged over 23 points and 11 rebounds per game. He then moved to Stanford University, where his collegiate career was marked by significant growth. During the 2012–13 junior campaign, he received the Pac-12 Most Improved Player award, followed by a senior year where he secured Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year status alongside first-team All-Pac-12 recognition.
Powell's entry into the NBA was a chaotic series of transactions. Selected 45th overall by the Charlotte Hornets in the 2014 draft, his rights were traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers just weeks later. By late September 2014, he had been moved again, this time to the Boston Celtics. It wasn't until December 18, 2014, that he was traded to the Dallas Mavericks in a multi-player deal involving Rajon Rondo. This move proved pivotal, as he would spend the majority of his career with the Mavericks franchise.
His tenure in Dallas has been defined by both remarkable milestones and physical setbacks. He has achieved career highs of 26 points in a single game and set a franchise record for 18 consecutive field goals made. However, his progress was famously interrupted by a season-ending Achilles tendon injury in January 2020. Despite such hurdles, Powell has remained a cornerstone of the team, reaching the 2024 NBA Finals and committing to the Canadian national team for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
