From Auckland prodigy to a record-breaking $13 million NRL contract
In short: Dylan Brown’s ascent in rugby league has been defined by meteoric talent and significant volatility. After turning down a $3 million offer from the Warriors to stay with Parramatta, the New Zealand international has navigated career-defining victories, serious injuries, and high-profile legal challenges on his path to a massive new deal.
Born in Auckland on 21 June 2000, Dylan Brown emerged as a standout talent in the junior ranks, leading the Parramatta Eels' S.G. Ball squad to a 30–22 victory over the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks in the 2017 grand final. His rapid rise saw him debut for the Eels' under 20s team at just 17 years old, followed shortly by his NRL debut in March 2019 against the Penrith Panthers. He grew up in Whangarei and is of Samoan and Niuean heritage. Before his professional rise, he attended The Hills Sports High School.
Brown's career has been punctuated by moments of historic dominance and personal struggle. In 2019, he was part of a Parramatta side that secured the biggest finals win in history, a 58–0 victory over Brisbane. However, his progress has faced interruptions, including a significant ankle injury in 2020 and a legal matter in 2023. Following a charge of sexual touching, Brown pleaded guilty to two counts in June 2023, resulting in an 18-month Community Corrections Order and a seven-match NRL suspension. His season was further disrupted by bone bruising on his back in 2019. Additionally, he faced a three-week ban after an incident involving a Roosters player.
Despite these setbacks, Brown's market value has remained exceptionally high. After a long tenure with Parramatta, he signed a massive 10-year deal with the Newcastle Knights, reportedly worth $13 million, to begin in 2026. His journey from the Hikurangi Stags to the international stage for New Zealand illustrates the intense pressures and immense rewards of professional rugby league at the highest level. He reached the milestone of his 100th first-grade game during the 2024 season. His international career includes scoring for New Zealand in the Pacific Championships.
