The defensive anchor of the legendary Legion of Boom
In short: Before he was an NFL star, Earl Thomas was a multi-sport standout in Texas. He transitioned from a consensus All-American at the University of Texas to a cornerstone of the Seattle Seahawks' defense, playing a pivotal role in their Super Bowl XLVIII championship victory.
Earl Thomas's ascent began at West Orange-Stark High School in Texas, where he was a versatile three-year starter across multiple positions, including defensive back, running back, and wide receiver. His athletic foundation was furthered by competing in track and field, where he reached the state finals as part of a 4 × 200 meters relay team with a time of 1:27.92.
After a redshirt year at the University of Texas, Thomas became a standout for coach Mack Brown's Longhorns. A record for Longhorn freshmen was set by him in 2008, when he achieved 17 pass breakups. By his redshirt sophomore year in 2009, he was a consensus first-team All-American and a finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, leading the Longhorns to an undefeated regular season and a appearance in the 2010 BCS National Championship Game.
Selected 14th overall in the 2010 NFL draft by the Seattle Seahawks, Thomas became a central figure in the 'Legion of Boom' defense. During his nine-season tenure in Seattle, he secured six Pro Bowl selections and five All-Pro honors. His defensive dominance helped lead the Seahawks to a Super Bowl XLVIII victory over the Denver Broncos and a subsequent appearance in Super Bowl XLIX.
Following his time in Seattle, Thomas joined the Baltimore Ravens as a free agent. Even in his later years, his impact remained significant, earning a seventh Pro Bowl invite during his single season with the Ravens.
