The quarterback who holds the record for most FCS wins
In short: Easton Stick's journey to the NFL is a masterclass in patience and persistence. From setting records in the Football Championship Subdivision to enduring years as a backup, his career illustrates the grueling reality of professional football where a single snap can take years to arrive.
Stick's rise began at North Dakota State University, where he took over the starting role after Carson Wentz was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles. While starting for the Bison, he achieved a commanding 49–3 tally, securing a portion of the Football Championship Subdivision's highest win total for a starting quarterback, a milestone he jointly holds with South Dakota State University's Mark Gronowski. He first appeared on the field against the Weber State Wildcats. During that debut, he managed three rushing attempts for 24 total yards.
His collegiate success was marked by high-scoring victories, including a 72–7 win over Mississippi Valley State in 2017 and a 37–10 FCS Championship Game win against Jacksonville State. Despite this pedigree, his professional path was non-linear. The Los Angeles Chargers chose Stick at 166th overall during the 2019 NFL draft's fifth round; however, he remained largely inactive early on, including a 2020 instance where Chase Daniel was preferred for the backup spot. His first official start occurred against the Indiana State Sycamores. In that specific contest, he threw for 126 yards and one score.
The 'waiting game' defined his time with the Chargers. In 2020, he entered a game for a split second before being substituted back out before taking a single snap. It took until 2023 for him to see significant action, eventually starting four games after Justin Herbert required season-ending surgery. Since then, Stick has navigated the volatile nature of the league, moving between the Falcons, Colts, and finally joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice squad in 2026. He spent time on the Falcons' practice squad in 2025. He eventually joined the Buccaneers' practice squad on August 31, 2026.
