In short: Before they were the Eagles, they were the "Normalites" and the "Hurons." Over a century of football history has seen the program navigate eras of absolute dominance, devastating losing streaks, and even a season cut short by a smallpox outbreak.

The program's identity has shifted significantly since its inception in 1891. Originally known as the "Michigan State Normal College Normalites" or the "Men from Ypsi," the team underwent several name changes. Following a 1929 contest sponsored by the Men's Union, students Gretchen Borst and George Hanner successfully campaigned to rename the team the "Hurons," a name they carried until 1990.

The program's history is defined by extreme peaks and valleys. The most successful era occurred between 1925 and 1939 under head coach Elton Rynearson, who remains the most winning coach in school history with 114 victories. During the 1925–1927 period alone, the team achieved perfect seasons and registered 19 shutouts. In contrast, the squad endured major difficulties, such as a 27-game losing streak during the early 1980s while Mike Stock coached, failing to score in seven matches.

Institutional policy has also dictated on-field performance. In the early 1960s, the program's success declined sharply following a decision by the university administration not to follow an Interstate Intercollegiate Athletic Conference policy that allowed member schools to award scholarships. This left the team competing against scholarship athletes without the same resources, contributing to a 29-game winless streak starting in 1959.

Today, the Eastern Michigan Eagles compete in the Mid-American Conference of the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), continuing a legacy that has seen them field a team nearly every year since 1891, with the sole exception of 1944.
