In short: Born in 1946, Eddie Villanueva evolved from a communist street parliamentarian and self-proclaimed atheist into one of the Philippines' most influential religious leaders. After a life-changing encounter in 1973, he founded the Jesus Is Lord Church Worldwide, eventually building a massive global following and a significant media empire.

Eduardo Cruz Villanueva, known as Bro. Eddie, began his career as a radical activist and economics professor deeply immersed in the labor movements of the 1970s. During the martial law era, he was imprisoned twice for his opposition to the regime and his efforts to combat land-grabbing syndicates in his home province of Bulacan. At this stage of his life, Villanueva openly identified as an atheist, a stance that shifted dramatically in 1973. He claims that while leading a legal battle against land-grabbers, he experienced a spiritual encounter that led to a personal miracle: the arrest of his opponents just five days later.

In 1978, Villanueva founded the Jesus Is Lord Fellowship, which grew from a small Bible study group into a global organization. By 2007, the church reported over five million members across 60 countries. This religious foundation provided the base for his expansion into media and politics. He established the ZOE Broadcasting Network, which operates major television channels, and founded the Jesus Is Lord Colleges Foundation. His political career has seen him run for president twice, in 2004 and 2010, and serve as a member of the 19th Congress of the Philippines.

Villanueva’s influence extends through his family, who hold various positions in Philippine government, a situation he defends as a commitment to public service rather than a political dynasty. His son, Joel Villanueva, serves as a Senator, while his late daughter, Joni Villanueva-Tugna, served as mayor of Bocaue. Despite his success, his career has not been without controversy, including criticism regarding the use of public funds for projects named after his family members and legal challenges involving his children. Today, he remains a prominent figure in Philippine society, balancing his roles as a legislator, media owner, and spiritual leader.
