In short: From surviving Hurricane Katrina to dominating the NFL, Eddie Lacy’s career was defined by sudden, explosive movement. Known for a signature spin that left defenders grasping at air, the former Alabama standout rose from a displaced childhood to become the Green Bay Packers' Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Born in June 1990, Edward Darwin Lacy Jr. experienced early upheaval when Hurricane Katrina forced his family to flee their New Orleans suburb of Gretel, Louisiana, to seek refuge in Texas. Eventually settling in Geismar, Louisiana, Lacy’s path led him to Dutchtown High School, where he emerged as a premier recruit. By 2009, he had committed to the University of Alabama, joining a powerhouse program under coach Nick Saban.

At Alabama, Lacy was part of a legendary era, contributing to three BCS National Championship titles during the 2009, 2011, and 2012 seasons. While initially playing behind stars like Mark Ingram II and Trent Richardson, his talent became undeniable. His agility was best showcased through a devastating spin move, so iconic that teammates and fans nicknamed him 'Circle Button,' a reference to the PlayStation button used to trigger such a maneuver in video games.

Lacy transitioned to the NFL in 2013, selected in the second round by the Green Bay Packers. His rookie campaign was stellar, earning him Offensive Rookie of the Year honors and a Pro Bowl selection. He became the first Packer to rush for 1,000 yards since 2009, totaling 1,178 yards. However, his professional trajectory later faced challenges from injuries and weight management issues. After a stint with the Seattle Seahawks in 2017, his high-production years gave way to a more difficult period in the league.

Beyond the field, Lacy's life has seen significant highs and lows, including his recent legal troubles in Arizona in late 2024. His career remains a study in the intense physical demands and the volatile nature of professional athletics.
