The versatile specialist who rewrote the Denver Broncos rookie record books
In short: In 2008, Eddie Royal entered the NFL not just as a wide receiver, but as a dual-threat force. His explosive debut and ability to dominate both receiving and return yards set a new standard for rookies in Denver, leaving a lasting mark on the franchise's history.
Eddie Royal's professional career began with a standout rookie season in 2008 for the Denver Broncos. Drafted in the second round, he immediately made an impact, recording 91 receptions—the third-most in NFL history for a rookie at that time, trailing only Puka Nacua and Anquan Boldin. His performance was so dominant that he earned the Diet Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week honor twice in his debut season.
Beyond his receiving prowess, Royal established himself as a premier return specialist. He accomplished a unique feat on 19 October 2009, when he became the first Broncos player, and just the 11th in the NFL, to score touchdowns via both a punt and a kickoff return during one match. That specific performance against the San Diego Chargers saw him rack up 235 total return yards.
Royal's versatility was a hallmark of his nine-season NFL career, which included stints with the San Diego Chargers and Chicago Bears. While his time in San Diego was marked by a $13.5 million contract and significant injuries, his impact remained visible. In 2013, he recorded a career-high eight touchdowns while playing under head coach Mike McCoy. By the time he concluded his career, Royal had left a legacy of franchise records, including most receiving yards by a Broncos rookie in a single season.
His foundation was built at Virginia Tech, where he was a standout for the Hokies from 2004 to 2007. He finished his collegiate career as the school's all-time leader in all-purpose yards with 4,686, a testament to the multi-faceted skill set that eventually defined his professional journey.
