In short: Before he was breaking records for the Ohio State Buckeyes, Emeka Egbuka was a multi-sport phenom in Steilacoom, Washington. His journey from winning MLB competitions to becoming a professional wide receiver reveals how diverse athletic foundations can shape an elite football career.

Born on October 14, 2002, in Tacoma, Washington, Emeka Egbuka’s path to the NFL was paved by more than just football. A standout at Steilacoom High School, Egbuka was a gifted baseball player, serving as a center fielder during his youth. At just 8 years old, he triumphed in the MLB's Pitch, Hit & Run contest for his age bracket. Egbuka maintains that playing baseball was crucial for building the physical skills needed for wide receivers.

His high school football career was equally dominant. As a junior, he earned the Washington Gatorade Player of the Year title after a season featuring 83 receptions, 1,607 receiving yards, and 25 touchdowns. His versatility was evident in his 2,240 all-purpose yards, which included rushing and punt return scores. While he initially harbored ambitions to play for the Oregon Ducks—inspired by their uniforms and his mentor, the late Steilacoom native Fotu Leiato—he ultimately committed to Ohio State as a five-star recruit.

Egbuka’s collegiate tenure at Ohio State was marked by record-breaking consistency. After enrolling early in January 2021, he progressed from an honorable mention All-Big Ten freshman to a sophomore with over 1,000 receiving yards. By his 2024 senior season, he had become the Buckeyes' career receptions leader with 205 catches. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers chose him with the 19th pick during the 2025 NFL draft. He made an immediate impact in his professional debut against the Atlanta Falcons, recording two touchdown catches, including a game-winner.
