How a Kentucky band traded metalcore for pop rock through constant evolution
In short: Formed in Lexington in 2006, Emarosa has spent nearly two decades navigating shifting lineups and sonic identities. From their early post-hardcore roots to their current pop rock sound, the band's journey is a masterclass in musical reinvention and survival in the alternative scene.
The band's origins trace back to high school, with founding members ER White, Will Sowers, Lukas Koszewski, and Jordan Stewart deciding to stay in their hometown of Lexington, Kentucky, rather than attending college to pursue music. Before their departure, the ensemble, initially known as Corsets Are Cages, produced a three-track demo featuring guitarist Mike Bryant and vocalist Chris Roberts. Following the recruitment of Chris Roetter and Madison Stolzer, the band transitioned to the name Emarosa.
The group's sound has undergone significant transformations. Their 2007 EP, This Is Your Way Out, marked their early era, followed by the 2008 debut album Relativity. While initially oriented toward post-hardcore and metalcore, the band began dropping heavy influences in favor of a rock sound. By the time they released their eponymous second album in June 2010, they were exploring more complex guitar riffs and pounding drum beats, with members expressing interest in incorporating folk and indie elements.
Lineup stability has been a recurring challenge. Following the departure of vocalist Jonny Craig in April 2011, the band entered a period of inactivity before eventually recruiting Bradley Walden in 2013. Since then, the band has continued to evolve, releasing albums like Versus in 2014, 131 in 2016, Peach Club in 2019, and Sting in January 2023. Today, ER White remains the sole remaining founding member as the band leans further into a pop rock direction.
