In short: In Ohio politics, some seats are treated like heirlooms. Emilia Sykes didn't just enter the political arena; she stepped into a dynasty. Her family maintained a continuous grip on the same state legislative seat for four decades, creating a rare lineage of power in Akron.

Emilia Strong Sykes was born into a political lineage that defined local governance for generations. Vernon Lee Sykes and Barbara Ann Sykes (née Johnson), a former State Representative, are her parents. The two parents successively held the same seat from 1982 to 2014, making Emilia part of a family tenure that spanned 40 years in the Ohio House of Representatives.

Sykes transitioned from this legacy into her own legislative career in 2013. After winning the Democratic nomination by defeating Frank Communale, she secured the seat with a landslide 72%–28% victory over Republican nominee Cynthia Blake. Her ascent featured early cross-party teamwork; specifically, while serving as minority leader in 2019, Ohio House bipartisan legislation nearly reached twice the sum of the prior four years.

Her career has since expanded to the national stage. After winning a highly competitive 2024 race—which saw over $6 million in opposing ad spending—she was sworn into the U.S. House of Representatives on January 7, 2023. Representing Ohio's 13th district, she now balances her family's local roots with national issues like railroad safety and maternal health, while continuing to navigate the complexities of bipartisan governance.

Sykes has also been a frequent traveler for diplomatic education, participating in high-level seminars to Israel and the West Bank funded by different organizations, including AIPAC and the J Street Education Fund. These trips have allowed her to engage directly with leaders like Benjamin Netanyahu and Isaac Herzog on matters of regional security.
